SECOND ANNUAL “FISHING IN THE CITY”

IRVING, Texas (April 17, 2008) –

On Saturday, April 5, 2008 Nissan North America presented the Second Annual “Fishing in the City” Pro-Am fishing tournament on Lake Carolyn in the heart of the Las Colinas Urban Center.  This event paired amateur anglers with Professional Bass Anglers as they competed to catch the five heaviest fish, and net proceeds of $7,464 benefited Irving Cares.  Professional anglers were James Biggs, Matt Hupp, Mike Laursen, Dwayne McPeek, Chris Nunalee, Vince Parello, Terry Peacock, Mike Petrovick, Jeff Piele, Rusty Roberson, Royce Sanders, Jeff Snyder, and Tim Wilcoxson.  Amateur anglers were Bob Bevier, Jerry Biggs, Jet Delce, Bob Durham, Steve Hummert, Curtis Mayes, Jr., Joe McGee, Allan Meagher, Michael Trybul, John Montelongo, Bill Alexander, Perry Walsh, and Dennis Webb.

Sponsors of the event included Nissan North America, Boyle & Lowry LLP, Herbert and Christina Gears, CSE Commercial Real Estate LP, and Sybil Walker.  Outback Steakhouse provided a sumptuous steak lunch in the VIP Pavilion.  Other in-kind donors were the City of Irving, Awards & Trophies, Corner Bakery, Cousins Properties, Embassy Suites, Ichthus Creative Guild, Irving Bass Club, Mallouf Photography, Omni Mandalay Hotel, Porter’s Army Navy, and Roy’s Pawn Shop.

Spots to fish with the professional anglers were auctioned to the highest bidder during an online auction before the event.  Anglers of all types came to Lake Carolyn to fish from the bank, as well as bid on one-hour spots with the anglers on the lake after the official tournament.

The winning team for the tournament was Terry Peacock and Bob Durham with 20.02 pounds from five fish.  In second place, Chris Nunalee and Bill Alexander had 17.66 pounds from five fish.  Third place went to James Biggs and Jerry Biggs with 17.08 pounds from five fish.  The Peacock/Durham team and the Nunalee/Alexander team tied for biggest bass at 6.07 pounds.  Rusty Roberson won the “Turkey Award” for catching the ugliest fish, a huge white sand bass.

This event was envisioned by Allan Meagher and this year’s co-chairperson, Sheila Hupp in 2007 when Irving Cares lost a grant for the Employment Services Program.  Trying to replace some of those funds, they raised $1,339 in its inaugural year.  For 2008, under the leadership of Sheila and Matt Hupp, and thanks to the tremendous support of Nissan North America, the event blossomed to net proceeds of $7,464.  Nissan North America also supports The Great Harvest ~ An Evening to Care, the fall fundraiser for Irving Cares.

“Fishing in the City is such an incredible family-friendly event which is complementary to Irving Cares' mission. Matt and I are honored to be involved in raising funds for Irving Cares and know that this event will continue to grow exponentially in the future,” said Sheila Hupp.

Ensuring that the most basic of human needs are being met is an important measure of a city’s quality of life.  It is what Irving citizens believed 51 years ago when they founded Irving Cares in 1957, and it is still true today.

Enriching People’s Lives.  That is the global vision of Nissan and all of its operating companies across the world.  Nissan strives to support this vision by not only offering our customers unparalleled products and services, but by improving the quality of life in the communities in which Nissan operates.  Our vision and the goals of Irving Cares are a perfect match.  We are very proud to be partnered with such a great organization,” said Jeff Edwards, Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation Vice President of Operations.

Since 1957, Irving Cares has offered a hand up, not a handout, for Irving families in crisis.  It served over 24,000 people in the Irving community last year, and the need continues to increase.  By providing limited financial assistance for rent, mortgage, utilities, transportation or prescriptions; an employment program; psychotherapy counseling; food pantry; transportation to County medical facilities and prescription deliveries; and information and referral, Irving Cares promotes a client’s self-sufficiency.  More information on Irving Cares can be found at www.irvingcares.org.

In North America, Nissan’s operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing.  More information on Nissan in North American and the complete line of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles can be found at www.nissannews.com.
